10 Movies for aliens

Posted in Movies, Odds, Writing on October 31, 2010 by The Prince of Pithy

A day or two after coming to the conclusion that I needed to take some time off from writing, I came up with an idea for a novel.  Sigh.  Anyway, as part of my laying the groundwork for this novel, I asked myself if I could send ten movies out to aliens, which ones would I send?  These don’t have to be the greatest movies, or even ones I like, but movies that give a broad overview to what it is to be human and our view of the world.  Here is what I came up with.  (Since I don’t know that many non-English films, I just stuck with English ones.)  What do you think, and what would your ten be?

Gone With the Wind (1939)
Citizen Kane (1941)
Spartacus (1960)
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Dances with Wolves (1990)
Schindler’s List (1993)
Apollo 13 (1995)
Titanic (1997)
Amistad (1997)
Shrek (2001)

The beginning of the real space age?

Today may be an important anniversary.  It is conceivable that today will mark the tenth anniversary of the last time every human was on Earth.  On October 31, 2000, the Expedition 1 crew of William Shepherd, Sergei K. Krikalev, and Yuri Gidzenko launched aboard their Soyuz from the Baikonur Cosmodrome for the first extended stay at the International Space Station (ISS).  They docked with the station on November 2, and since then the ISS has been permanently crewed.  There has always been someone in space for the past decade.

The ISS should remain operational for another decade, but once it is abandoned will there be other space stations that will be permanently crewed?  Hopefully, yes.  Here are some of the groups that are planning on launching space stations in the near future:

Bigelow Aerospace

Energia/Orbital Technologies

China

So it is possible that with all these laboratories, and hotels, and factories and whatever else ends up in orbit, that there will always be people out in space.  October 30, 2000 may mark the last time in history that every single human was on Earth.  October 31, 2000 may really mark when we became a spacefaring civilization.

Tired of “The Event”

Posted in Rant, TV on October 26, 2010 by The Prince of Pithy

I’m watching the sixth episode “Loyalty” right now, and it is annoying me.  My biggest problem with the show is the whole Sean/Leila arc.  I DON’T CARE!  I want to see what the aliens are doing, not these two.  I know they were put in so there would be a love story to appeal to people who don’t like straight scifi.  But I like scifi!  I don’t like sappy romance.  Get your sappy romance out of my scifi!
