Can Man be Good Without gods?
One of the tired, old arguments believers use whenever attacking atheism is that throughout the millennia the vast majority of people have believed in a deity of some sort. The standard reply to that is, “When the vast majority of people believed the Earth to be flat, did that make it so?”
Today I thought of a way to use this against another argument believers make, that man is flawed. They point to all the wars and atrocities committed over the millennia – when the vast majority of people believed in a deity of some sort – as proof man is inherently “not good” and one needs to believe in a deity of some sort to be good.
I will not claim that if the vast majority of people didn’t believe in deities there would be fewer wars and atrocities, but really, could we do worse?
