I want to take the time to announce that my short story “Enigma” has been published by Books To Go Now and can be downloaded here for Kindle and Nook for only $0.99.

“Enigma” is set in my Human Republic Universe, and consists of two parts. Part I follows Carlos Molina, a maintenance man at a comet mining facility. He is sent out to fix a problem with one of the automated miners. In the process, he discovers a cube embedded in the comet’s nucleus.

Part II is set five years later and follows Doctor Susan Black, Director of Cube Studies. With the upcoming anniversary of the discovery of the Molina Cube, she is deluged by news requests for comments. During this she gives an interview to a student from her alma mater concerning the nature of the Cube.

For reasons too complicated and mundane for a blog, I haven’t been able to update my website for about six months. But I’ve finally been able to update it in the last couple of days. The updates are mostly simple things – like the blurbs and links to the few stories I’ve posted the last few months – but I’ve also updated the page for my next book, The All-You-Can-Read Buffet. Before, it had pretty much just been a page with the title, but now I have the working cover, book blurb, and content list. So check that out.

The other change I’ve made is to add a PayPal Donate button on the main page. For the longest time I put off doing something like that because it seemed … desperate? But I figured it would be better to have it and have no one use it than have someone want to give me money and them not being able to. So I’m not asking for donations; I’m just letting you know I’ll take them.

In case you didn’t know, I write a column on Examiner.com. You should check it out. Anyway, Examiner.com is always sending emails about new things they are doing or to thank me for being a contributor or something. I usually just delete these message, but I got one today that I felt I needed to share:

Astronomer porn?

I maintain that a lack of sleep was a large factor in this, but the other day I was working on a story and I realized it sounded like astronomer porn. I was describing how this unknown object was first detected with the “125 meter optical telescope at the Lunar Farside Observatory.” I just pictured astronomers having to put the book down and go take a cold meteor shower. Ba-dum ching.

In case you’re wondering, I’m more embarrassed about the pun.

Sex ed and prayer

This was an odd little thought that popped into my head while I was trying to fall asleep last night. How many of the people, who rail against schools usurping parental duties by teaching sex ed, turn around and rail against these same schools and teachers not leading their kids in prayer?

Last night I was out looking at the moon. Twelve men had walked on it before I was even born, yet we haven’t been back. Why? Well, part of it is politics, but also, as a species we spend too much time looking sideways or backward. We need to start looking forward.
